INTRODUCTION TO SOIL BIO-ENGINEERING
A COURSE WITH KALYAN THAPA

The course consists of three main sections:

1 A history and overview of soil bio-engineering

2 Learning unique soil-bioengineering techniques + terminologies

3 Hands-on, field experience

This program is designed for adults with practical experience and training in landscaping, engineering, or an adjacent practice, and utilizes participatory training methods. Each session is limited to a maximum of 20 attendees and is designed to run over three to five days.

In this course soil bio engineering is defined as "the use of living vegetation, either alone or in conjunction with civil engineering structures and non-living plant material, to reduce shallow-seated instability and erosion on slopes."

Emphasis is placed on local vegetation and the regional challenges of the local geography, and each section can be customized for specific cohort.

Study in each of the three parts lasts approximately one day.

Participants who complete the entire course will have a solid understanding of the key techniques used in soil bio-engineering and some good ideas about what kinds of problems can be solved with such sustainable and earth-friendly erosion solutions.
